"White Paper for Geriatric Medicine" Published

Analysis by GEBERA

In 2009, the Bundesverband Geriatrie e.V. (Federal Association of Geriatric Medicine) commissioned GEBERA with the preparation of a "White Paper for Geriatric Medicine". The objective was to prepare a well-founded analysis of geriatric health care in Germany.

The primary concern of the white paper was to analyse the current state of geriatric treatment and care in Germany. In addition, GEBERA's research encompassed the assessment and evaluation of prospective developments of geriatrics.

The "White Paper for Geriatric Medicine" is now available in bookshops.

Especially against the background of demographic trends, providing the elderly with an adequate range of specialist geriatric treatment and care is a central issue in both health care policy and society at large. This concerns not only individual patients but also the sustainability of the health care system in general. Regrettably, the issue’s contentual complexity as well as insuffcient data have rendered existing efforts at its resolution perfunctory. As a consequence, the Federal Association of Geriatric Medicine commissioned GEBERA to document and evaluate the provision of geriatric treamtment and care in Germany.

White Paper for Geriatric Medicine (Weißbuch Geriatrie) offers the comprehensive analysis of the issue of geriatric medicine in Germany. It features full coverage of the existing structures of service provision and predicts the future development of demand. The paper briefly reviews the issue of financing and concludes with a discussion of possible future structures for geriatric treatment and care.
